On National Doctor’s Day 2024, Narayana Educational Institutions celebrated the invaluable contributions of doctors and the profound impact they have on our lives. Our Director, Dr. P. Sindhura, addressed the students, sharing her experiences and insights. She emphasized the importance of the medical profession and offered valuable learnings for students to take away, inspiring them to appreciate the dedication and hard work of doctors in our community.
Dr. P. Sindhura’s path to becoming a doctor is a testament to dedication and passion. Reflecting on her journey, she shared a pivotal moment from her youth: “I was in 9th standard when the Narayana Educational Institutions received permission to start a medical college. Living on the premises of Narayana Junior College in Nellore, I had a front-row seat to watch the medical college take shape. It made me realise that medicine is more than just a career; it’s a calling. From that moment, becoming a doctor wasn’t just a career choice for me—it became my dream.”
Despite having a strong aptitude for mathematics, Sindhura chose to pursue BiPC to follow her dream of becoming a doctor. Transitioning from mathematics to biology posed significant challenges due to the vastly different mindset and approach required. “As a Maths student, I was accustomed to logical thinking and problem-solving, whereas medical studies demanded intensive reading and memorisation of terms rooted in Greek and Latin. Adapting to this shift took time, and initially, it was quite tough for me,” she recounted.
Her MBBS journey at Narayana Medical College in Nellore was filled with rigorous training and high expectations from day one. Reflecting on her student days, she fondly remembered her time in the hostel, which she described as the best part of her life. “I loved the independence and the friendly atmosphere. I’d go from room to room for casual chats, taking notes, or exchanging ideas with my hostel mates. It was a vibrant atmosphere. I was heavily involved in the cultural committees as well. From filmmaking, Mad arts making, to dance performances, I immersed myself in every aspect. Those experiences were such a significant part of my time there and taught me invaluable lessons,” she reminisced.
After completing her MBBS, Dr. P. Sindhura went on to Northwestern University for clerkship and research, where she learned the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. “During my internship in the Nephro-transplant department, I had to collaborate closely with teams from nephrology, transplant surgery, emergency medicine, general medicine, and surgery. As an intern, you’re at the bottom of the hierarchy, moving from one department to another, trying to impress each head while keeping your sanity intact. With excellent guidance from professors and support from colleagues, I managed well, proving to myself that hard work pays off no matter what,” she reminisced.
Dr. P. Sindhura encouraged aspiring medical students to stay dedicated to their dreams, keep learning, and aim to make a positive impact. “First of all, be proud that you have chosen a medical career as your dream. Medicine offers a highly fulfilling and secure career path with limitless opportunities ahead. The competition is fierce and your journey will be tough, but the difference you will make in people’s lives is priceless”.
As we celebrate National Doctor’s Day 2024, Dr. P. Sindhura’s story serves as a beacon of inspiration, highlighting the dedication and resilience that define the medical profession. Her journey from a determined student to a respected leader in the field embodies the spirit of National Doctor’s Day, a day dedicated to honouring those who dedicate their lives to healing others. At Narayana, our aim is to support and help students grow to realise their full potential so that they can excel and fulfil their dreams because, at Narayana — Your Dreams are Our Dreams.
